Of lately, I’ve been reading a lot about Amazon’s plans to extend its business model into an online payment service to compete with the dominating PayPal and Google Checkout. Today Amazon official announced the introduction of Flexible Payment Services (FPS) to their Amazon Web Services family.

Amazon FPS directly competes with PayPal API and provides much more than what developers and site owners need to set up payment system on their site. Amazon FPS is currently open to limited number of developers seeking to integrate this new payment service on their site.

Existing Amazon customers can pay using their same login credentials and payment information available on file. For payments above $10, Amazon charges 2.9% + $0.30 (PayPal also charges the same. Google Checkout: 2% + $0.20). With this new venture, Internet Retailer Amazon hopes to leap their business model into profitable online payment service.

In other news, Amazon kicked off a new online grocery store called AmazonFresh. The invite-only service is available to only few neighborhoods around Settle. You can order fresh, frozen or self-stable food from their site with pre-dawn option, which means you’ll get a temperature controlled tote sitting on your doorsteps next morning (free delivery for orders over $25). They also have daytime delivery (free delivery for orders over $50) and local pick-up option.
