One downside about downloading files over the BitTorrent protocol is that you need a dedicated BitTorrent client like uTorrent or Azureus. Beginners often get confused and couldn’t really figure out how to download from torrents. If you are one of those beginners, then you must defiantly checkout BitLet, an experimental web-based torrent downloader applet designed in Java which promises to remove the hassles out of torrents. BitLet can be great, if you rarely download stuffs from torrents.
BitLet runs on Java Virtual Machine backend, so you’ll need to install that if you haven’t already. To download any torrent file using BitLet, just copy and paste the torrent address (e.g. http://www.example.org/file.torrent) in the input box on bitlet.org and press the “Download torrent” button. That’s it.
Another catchy feature is that they provide code for torrent downloads which can be embedded in your blog or website to allow your audience to easily download.
I tried downloading a 2MB torrent file and found that download speed comparable with other client, but my only concern is that it doesn’t fully stick to the torrent rules (I mean… give something to take something). While downloading using BitLet, you won’t be uploading anything. It might sound great to save bandwidth, but it pollutes the entire torrent swarm.
