As Alexa celebrates the 10 birthday of its Alexa Toolbar, an official extension called Sparky has made its way to Firefox. Previously, Firefox users had to use an alternative extension called SearchStatus. Now with Sparky, Alexa promises to measure traffic stats more accurately for Firefox users.

Once installed, you’ll notice a nifty traffic history graph along with the Rank Indicator at the bottom right of your browser. Clicking on the graph will popup the menu which includes shortcuts to various information like Site Overview, Traffic Details and Related Links.

Those concerned with privacy may not be interesting in trying out Sparky because it sends personally identifiable information over to Alexa’s servers, so that they can measure traffic details accurately.

I personally think that there is nothing much usable about Alexa (or Sparky) toolbar, but people associated with search engine optimization argue that installing Alexa toolbar helps improve the Alexa Rank of your site. Most online advertising companies rely on Alexa Rank for setting prices or approving sites for their network.

  1. I agree with you…there really isn’t anything usable with this. But there is no doubt that people will be using it to try and gain a higher rank.
