State owned BSNL has decided to launch its wireless data services using CDMA 2000 IX technology. Reliance and Tata Telecommunications already offer CDMA based wireless data service, but the tariff is very pricy and bandwidth caps make this service unaffordable for most users. BSNL aims to revolutionize wireless internet for laptop as well as home users by offering cheap internet service. Presently, the wireless data service is available in locations where BSNL’s CDMA IX MSC network is available. The tariff has already been put up on BSNL’s website.

NIC (Network Interface Card) offers speeds upto 144 Kbps, whereas EVDO (Evolution-Data Optimized) can deliver speeds upto 2 Mbps. I’m not so excited with this announcement from BSNL, as they have hardly covered India with their CDMA network. Poor customer support and frequent outage seems to be haunting DataOne customers all over India.

  1. This is good. I wont need to worry much when I go back to India. :) Hopefully when I get back, they would have improved their serivce, or the at least the competitors would have.

  2. pretty cool :) liked the news. this would mean more progress in terms of internet access in everybody’s house.

  3. That is really a good news, private companies are charging too much and their services are also not very good.

  4. Yippe!! I bet other companies will follow the suit.. Now at last we can watch videos from YouTube from our mobiles!!!

  5. yeah but remember BSNL is always powered with poor customer service :-)

  6. First ask them [BSNL] to offer the current services in all areas with good quality then it will be nice if they introduce new features. Without having a good network how they could be successful in offering services like these ?

  7. … Tight competition in Internet Providers section too !!

  8. Wow. This is really good thing from BSNL. Unlimited access for cheap rates.
