AOL to provide unlimited email storage

Following the lead by Rediff and Yahoo, AOL has decided to remove the caps and provide unlimited storage to the users of their email service. The next release of AOL Mail will also include integrated AIM chat box, calendar and RSS feed handling capabilities. POP3 and IMAP are also said to be supported.

Statistically speaking, an average user hardly uses 50 – 100 MB of storage space. Saying unlimited storage space is merely a marketing gag. AOL is surely putting a lot of efforts in being like Yahoo Mail! They’ve made some considerable improvements to their AJAX interface over a course of time.

AOL Mail is one of the most popular email services with over 53 million users worldwide. They are the third most popular service in the US, just behind Yahoo Mail and Hotmail. Gmail is left behind in the unlimited storage space race. I’m pretty sure they’ll come up with something similar.

Interesting move. I’m just settled with Gmail.

Its quite strange to see such a small market share for Gmail which till now is the best email service I’ve ever used. But, I guess they entered the market late.

I think Hotmail will be the next to change over to unmetered storage. I don’t think Gmail would change soon. I mean, one of the fun things about Gmail is the memory counter adding up every second.

I think Gmail should make that joke about sending print outs of emails to people come true. Even if its a gag, its quite possible. Anyway, just another product in the bandwagon.
