Some of the coolest Street View Sightings

Last week, Google introduced a new feature for Google Maps which lets us see the streets in a 360 degree view. It was pretty awesome, but it had some privacy issues as well. Since then, people have been spotting funny and weird scenes from Street View.

Some of the photos used in Street View were taken from a disco ball looking camera mounted on the top of a Volkswagen Beetle. Here’s a snapshot of that vehicle:

Nice! I’ve seen some of these circulating around. Good find on the mystery machine- I’ve seen the van in person a few times parked around the Fry’s Electronics Store in Palo Alto.
Also, if you look around the googleplex, you will find what appears to be the google maps team flagging down the camera van. :)

Get caught by one of these cameras and you truly will be put on the World map. At last that phrase makes sense.
Beware the VW Beetles. Big Google is watching!

On the other hand, if you want to hack the Google map database into your very own ultra-visual version of Wikimapia, stand outside your home with a big placard that reads “Guybrush Threepwood lives here” (‘Guybrush Threepwood’ to be replaced by your name of course), and wait for a suspicious looking New Beetle to drive by.
