Environmentalist have a new reason to rejoice. Instead of throwing away your old 5 gig 1st gen iPod (or whatever), when you get that shiny new 80 gig iPod, you can rather sell it to the enterprising folks at Buymybrokenipod.com. Looks like they’d probably refurbish it and sell it to someone who’d wanna buy it. This is kinda reminiscent of the old adage “One man’s thrash is another man’s treasure”
They seem to have setup a nice wizard like interface for getting a price estimate for old iPods based on it’s condition, model… etc. Just to test it out, I tried to get a quote on my relatively new 80 gig iPod (~ 3 months old), and interestingly I got a quote of USD 111.

That’s a really clever business idea. The reason most people haven’t done something like this before is because they realised that things like the iPod are very much status symbols and style statements. For most people the whole point is to buy a NEW one.
But that’s exactly what works in the idea’s favour. A refurbished iPod is still an iPod. If it’s been refurbished well, it might be undetectable to the untrained eye, and so all the status and style points still hold true, only now at a reduced price.
Environmentalism meets capitalism. Brilliant!
