Pidgin 2.0 (formerly GAIM) now available

GAIM, the multi protocol instant messenger client whose development was stopped due to trademark settlement issue with AOL and had to renamed the project as Pidgin is finally available for download. It includes some refreshing new features like:

  • Supports almost all instant messaging protocols like AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, XMPP (Jabber), ICQ, IRC, SILC, SIP/SIMPLE, Novell GroupWise, Lotus Sametime, Bonjour, Zephyr, Gadu-Gadu, and QQ.
  • Clean new interface with a cool new logo.
  • Online buddies appear with green dot and buddies who are away can be seen with a clock. Similarly, Yahoo users who are signed into mobile appear as a green dot with a mobile icon to the right. You can find out your buddy’s network by hovering over his name.

By default, Pidgin doesn’t enable smiley; you’ll have to manually enable smiley from Tools > Preference > Smiley Themes, that’s certainly the only complaint I’m having with Pidgin. Otherwise, Pidgin looks bright and refreshing. Now that the legal battle is over, Pidgin should continue to dominate AIM users and AOL is unable to do anything about it.

  • I really like this software, i have been using this software for almost one and half year, it is very light in terms of resources and is having very clean interface.

I like Pidgin very much. I think it's a very cute name and I love the mascot. Having its own name will help differentiate Pidgin from AIM.

My complaint is, I can't find smiley themes for it. Does anyone know where I can download the AIM, MSN and Yahoo smiley themes? Thank you.
  • While I always heard of GAIM as a popular choice on Linux, my trials with it on Windows a few years ago were not great. It seemed to be a bit heavy and clunky on Windows probably because of the GTK library issues or similar.

Haven't tried this latest version, but the program still seems mush more bloted than Miranda IM, which would be my choice for best and lightest multi-protocol messager for Windows users.

Will definitely give this new version a try though.
  • This software is really good :)
  • I am personally fed from all the web messengers - i use Google Talk and partially the live messenger. Nevertheless, Pidgin is a great piece of software
