When I first wrote about Snap Preview, it received lots of criticism as many users found it somewhat annoying. Snap fought against all odds and tried hard to improve their service. Recently they ran a contest for users to suggest their ideas, so that they could improve. As an outcome, Snap Preview is no more; it has evolved into a better product called Snap Shots, which is much more usable than Snap Preview.

Snap Shot is similar to Snap Preview, but it will show relevant preview information, rather than just a screenshot of the underlying page. Currently works for links from 9 prominent sites like Amazon, IMDB, YouTube, Wikipedia, Flickr, Yahoo Finance and Reuters. For other links, it’ll be the same old Snap Preview type popup.

Snap Shots aims at making popups much more informative, rather than just image preview. For instance, popups shown for YouTube videos will have a playable video. Similarly for Flickr, the popups will show the photo. Snap Shots is much more usable now, I bet those who found Snap Preview annoying will love Snap Shots. Checkout the Shots Central Page, it’ll give you a better idea.

I think Snap Shots is pretty cool. Good to see the companies learn from their mistakes and come out with the best for their users. Would you like to see Snap Shots on this blog?

Update: If you already have Snap Preview on your blog, you don’t need to remove the code or replace it. It’ll be automatically flipped over to Snap Shots.
