Taiwan based iPod manufacture reveals that Apple has plans to launch WiFi enabled iPod later in the second half of this year. I strongly believe that WiFi is the most wished feature in an iPod, which lets user share or stream music his music to another iPod. The news remains unconfirmed as Apple is yet to make any official announcement, but since the rumor came from the manufacture, it might be reliable.
Universal Scientific Industrial is said to be manufacturing the WiFi chipset, while Foxconn will assemble the unit. I’m surprised that it took so long for Apple to add WiFi to iPods. Competing music players from Microsoft, SanDisk and Creative are already selling or will soon ship players with WiFi. However, Zune music player from Microsoft has been severally criticized for implementing WiFi in a way which leaves it completely useless. Zunes users can search each other and sends songs, but they expire after three plays or three days, whichever comes earlier. Expired music cannot be resent, but they can only be marked from later purchase. Many songs from the Zune marketplace cannot be shared because they have been marked as non-distributable by the record companies.
WiFi enabled iPods had to come sooner or later, let’s hope that Apple won’t copy Microsoft’s approach to cripple this feature.
