Would you like to export your Gmail Messages?

On the April Fools Day, Google made us all laugh with Gmail Print feature which will print your Gmail messages and get it shipped to your location free of cost. We all know that it’s too silly to be true; however, it’s not a bad idea after all. Maybe not paper, but atleast a convenient option to export your messages and burn it on a disc would be greatly appreciated.

Apart from Gmail’s regular suggestion site which shows just 12 different options, Googling Google shows another suggestion site us has 45 options. You can select only upto 5 options out of 45. I picked these:

  1. Export messages to a CD for storage
  2. Import messages from my other email accounts
  3. To-do list
  4. Multi-person chat
  5. Ability to block a user from sending mail to your account

Google might or might-not implement these request features, however we know that Google is considering adding these features in the near future. What did you pick?

all your picks are important features. From the list you referred to, I would add message personalization (setting backgrounds).
Another feature i would like to see is the ability to work offline (like Outlook). This can be achieved by developing a Desktop Gmail version capable of doing the synch with the online version, while web connectiviy is available.

Gili: You could still use Gmail offiline by synching mails via POP3 to any email client. I prefer Thunderbird for this.

Thilak: I used the POP3 synch in the past, and found its setup and operation somehow cumbersome. Although, as you pointed out correctly, there is a method to work offline, i feel that a Desktop application by Google, that will allow to natively interact with Gmail on the road might be great.

I like the blocking feature. I’m not sure but I think there’s a service like this in Hotmail when I’m with them few years ago. Should be useful to block spammers that uses the same email every time.

I actually like the five you chose. Those seem to be the most important at least for me. My favorites would be 2,3, and 4.

I wonder if we really need the blocking option when we can easily add a filter and move the unwanted mailer’s mail to trash automatically.

Suresh: Yeah, your points make some sense, but I guess non-techincal dudes might find the option reasonable.

Does anyone know if this option is available yet? Really would be a useful option. I might write a script to do it if not…. check back for the link later.
