In a press release today, Apple announced that they’ve sold 100 million iPods since it was first launched five and half year ago, in November 2001, making it the fastest selling music player. Apple has rolled out 10 different models of iPod spanning across 5 generations. This news would surely bring a grin on the face of iPod owners and Apple fans.

Steve Jobs : “At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.”

iPod along with iTunes (the world’s largest catalogue of music with over 5 million songs) and over 4000 accessories built specifically for iPod, change the way we think of a music player. It has almost killed the not-so popular Walkman series from Sony and other competitors.

In developing countries like India, iPods have yet to make a breakthrough; people here prefer music phones over iPod. Maybe it’s the price factor which is holding the iPod back in these countries. I strongly believe that Apple will take over the current cellphone market share with their upcoming iPhone. Congratulation Apple!

  1. 100 million .. that’s a lot. Even in the Philippines, the iPod hasn’t really taken off due to the price. Most are waiting for the iPhone though.

Another customer was asking “What is that? a phone?”, so the sales boy said “MP3 Player”. The reply was “Wow.. that’s small, where do I put my CD?”
