In an effort to make Mobile Search more usable, Google has revamped their mobile search interface to get the right information with minimal effort. This move from Google follows Yahoo’s new mobile search, which focused more on local content and lesser links.

I didn’t get a chance to try it myself, but from what we read on their blog, Google mobile search is location centric to deliver relevant local results. The personalized homepage provides location based information such as movies running at a theater near you, weather at your location, news and stocks. You don’t need to provide your location, over and over again, just save your location once. The below screenshot from Google Blogoscoped compares the old and new version of Google mobile search head-to-head:

You don’t need to specify the type of search, the search results are based on queries. For some queries, you’ll see image results along with web results. For others, you might see local results or news results as well.

In short, you’ll get the information you need on-the-move, without much scrolling or clicking. While compared to Yahoo’s mobile search, Google provides better results with lesser clicks. Good to see Yahoo and Google fight for market dominance over mobile search. Healthy competition indeed.

Visit Google.com from your mobile browser or google.com/m to see the new Google Mobile Search in action. I’m personally a mobile search junkie, especially when away from home. How often do you use Mobile Search?
