Back in February, MSN Soapbox moved from private beta to public beta. Due to the novelty factor, everybody was enthusiastic about the Microsoft owned YouTube rival, but soon illegal video started filling up on Soapbox which resulted in Microsoft pulling off the plugs and moving it to private beta again. No new users registration allowed, however if you have already signed up for Soapbox, you can still access the site.

In the mean time, Microsoft will work on creating a filtering system to weed out illegal videos and prevent it from being uploaded. To accomplish this task, Microsoft has licensed digital finger printing technology from Audible Magic. Maybe because both YouTube and MySpace have decided to use digital finger printing technology to fight pirated video content.

Pirated videos seem to haunting the entire Video sharing segment. Recent, Viacom sued YouTube for $1 billion and Microsoft don’t want to take any chances like that, but the question is will you return to Soapbox if they flip it back again? Probably no because the hype is already over! Unless they come out with something rock solid, they can’t capture any market won by YouTube already.

  2. This thing will never come come to life :(

  3. @ Everyday Weekender - I think it will come to life. Don’t forget it’s Microsoft. I think their approach towards the copyrights issue is smart. I sometimes don’t understand how YouTube don’t get sued on a daily basis for copyright infringement.
