Dell has started shipping their new low-cost desktop PC in China. Dell EC280 Desktop sells for 2599 Chinese Yuan ($336 or 14664 Indian Rupees) and features Windows XP instead of Vista. Another model running Linux is also available at a cheaper price. The hardware specifications include 1.2 Ghz Intel Celeron and 15-inch CRT monitor.
A slightly higher priced edition which runs on Linux and includes AMD Athlon64 3200+ and 17-Inch LCD monitor sells for 3999 Chinese Yuan ($517 or 22500 Indian Rupees). Dell being second largest PC manufacture is facing some stiff competition from Lenovo in Chinese cheap desktop segment. Although both Dell and Lenovo recommend Vista Home premium on their websites, their Desktop PCs ships preinstalled with Windows XP. I guess, this is just a cost cutting measure.
Strangely, Dell sells only upto 5 such low priced Desktops to consumers due to heavy prices cuts and discounts. So far Dell has very successful with their direct sales business model, which cuts middle men and improves profits. However, this would be put into test bed when they enter emerging markets such as China, India, Brazil and Russia.
