Last week, we wrote an article on accessing files and folders quickly by assigning keyboard shortcuts, but creating too many shortcuts on the desktop made it look awfully ugly and excessive shortcuts will defiantly add some confusion. Destinyking shares an even better trick to boost productivity by creating shortcuts and moving them in your ‘windows’ folder, so that you could easily navigate using the Run dialogue

How to?

  1. Right click on the folder and click ‘Create Shortcut’
  2. Rename the shortcut (for example: Rename ‘Shortcut to music’ to simply ‘music’).
  3. Move the shortcut to the Windows Directory (Usually, it’s c:/windows).
  4. Now, If you need to open that folder, you simply go to Start > Run and type the ‘shortcut name’

The common approach to open an folder using run dialogue is to type the full folder address (for example c:/wamp/www/wordpress), but using the above trick, you can do it with a simple keyword assigned to the folder.

Thanks for the brilliant tip, Destinyking

  2. In the same spirit. You can fast copy or move files to predefined directory using Send To option.
Create shortcut to directory You often use and move it to \Documents and Settings\UserName\SendTo\
Now to copy files/folders select them right click ->Send To -> Your folder name. Click it and files will be copied to this location. To move file hold left shift while clicking right mouse button.
    I find it pretty useful.

We can even more optimize this trick using our cute little program “Launchy”….. just copy all the shortcuts to a new folder anywhere and then point launchy to index that folder…
now when ever we want to open a shortcut,we juz need to type the first few letters of the shortcut name in launchy & thtz it…

And Launchy is a free tool btw..in case if you are not already using it :)

  5. Nice tip Thilak . Never knwe about it .
