Yesterday, Yahoo Mail Team rolled out a new feature which adds instant messaging capabilities into Yahoo Mail Beta. Users can chat with their Yahoo Messenger buddies through the web based interface, without any need to download Yahoo Messenger. Google had added a similar feature to GMail a year ago, but Yahoo! Integration looks better.

For instance, you are drafting a mail to your friend and in the mean time, he appears online, you could initiate a chat and the drafted message will be automatically translated into an instant message. The chat window looks pretty awesome and gives you a Y! Messenger like feeling with avatars, sounds and bubbled chat conversation (This is something which we didn’t see in GMail)

If someone sends you an instant message, it will popup into its own tab and will be highlighted yellow. This new feature isn’t available to everyone, and it would be gradually released to everyone. I didn’t get this feature for my account, but from the screencast created by Ryan Kennedy, it looks pretty nice. This intergration would surely add more productivity into Yahoo Mail Beta and further reduce the gap between email and instant messaging.

  1. This new feature is excellent.

I agree on the topic that Yahoo!’s add is far much better than of Google. Yahoo gives a 95% feel of Messenger whereas Gmail gives just a simple text exchange thing.

  2. Ajay: You’re a pro when it comes to news finding :D

  3. I check it out and found it good.
I like the kinda ‘tabs’ feature.

  4. Thanks ;)

That was the announcement during the Web 2.0 conference… they are finally rolling it out.

  5. [...] for my country at that time. If you look into the past, Yahoo had announced that they’ll integrate Yahoo Messenger within Yahoo Mail; so far the feature hasn’t been enabled for my account. [...]
