Close Microsoft followers must already be aware of Vienna, the next  successor to Windows Vista. Reports from PCWorld suggest that Vienna might be due by 2009 (yeah, that’s just two years from now). Actually, Vista was expected to release by 2003, but that didn’t happen. In the mean time, Microsoft was forced to put more work on developing Windows XP SP2 rather than giving time to Vista. Finally, Vista ended up losing features like WinFS, native HD DVD and FireWire-B support, enhanced speech recognition and PC-to-PC sync. Along with those lost features, Vienna is also rumored to include a brand new file system and a new user interface which eliminates start menu and toolbars.

It’s also said that Vienna will break backward compatibility with existing programs and some sort of emulation to run older programs. In my opinion, the probability of Vienna coming out by 2009 is very low. If it is really true, then upgrading to Vista doesn’t make any sense to me.

  1. Wow, I had no clue it was supposed to be released in 2003. If people read this I think they will heavily consider not upgrading, especially if they have just bought a new computer. However, I guarantee it will be at least 2010 before we see Vienna.

  2. Who knows we mind even need a even more powerful system than the one we need for vista…which could be called WOW WOW,

  3. Right now i think windows employees are trying die hard to improve vista version and it will take almost a year (2008) and after that Vienna can also take 2.5 to 3 years at least for getting introduced in market .

  4. I don’t think Vienna will be released by 2009 since Microsoft will again be busy patching the hastly released vista for at least a year and more.. they won’t have time for new OS and they also very well know this fact that if they release new OS just after 2 years, 99% people (who really purchase OS) will stick to XP
