Steve Rubel points out that Technorati is secretly working on a Digg like site called Technorati WTF (WTF stands for Where’s the Fire). The site was live when Steve spotted it, but as the news broke out, Technorati pulled the plugs. Anyway, Steve was kind enough to capture a screenshot from WTF:

From the screenshots, it looks like a Digg based model to bring out the hottest stories. But why a digg clone? Why not index sites like Del.icio.us, Reddit or Digg to bring out the hottest stories?

TechCrunch also reports that Technorati has abandoned their TechMeMe like site called Technorati Explorer which was launched in early 2006; without any official announcements regarding it.

As of now, whole Technorati is down for scheduled maintenance. With all these stories breaking out, I don’t think this might just be a coincidence; something is going on behind the curtains.

  1. “But why a digg clone? Why not index sites like Del.icio.us, Reddit or Digg to bring out the hottest stories? ”

Thilak, I think you made a mistake there by stating digg twice. The second sentence should not have digg in it.

  2. Technorati very badly needs some magic. they are low on cash (just got funded, maybe the last chance they have)

but i doubt if a digg clone will be that magic.
    they need something else.

  3. The service is live now and its no digg clone.

    Check it out. :D

  4. [...] Yesterday’s coverage on Technorati WTF proved to be false when Technorati unveiled WTF today. It isn’t a digg clone at all; it’s just a medium to bring the hottest stories around the web. Unlike Digg, WTF doesn’t link to hot stories, but users write these hot stories themselves and get it voted by others. Stories with most votes rise, others sink. No blogs required! David Sifry, Founder and CEO of Technorati writes: But it isn’t only about explaining the hot searches or buzziest topics going on in the blogosphere at any moment. You can also write a WTF on any topic that someone would search for, and provide information and resources to them about that topic or subject. So, you might want to write a WTF about yourself or your friend’s names, or your company (or maybe even your competition!) [...]

  5. Paul J: No, I did it purposefully, I wanted to express “Why they worked on a Digg Clone instead of indexing sites like Reddit, Digg, Netscape to generate the hot list?”

  6. Lovedeep: Thanks, I made a clarification here
