BitTyrant is a selfish new BitTorrent client which claims to increase download speeds by nearly 70% while compared with standard BitTorrent clients. Its which is based on Azureus 2.5 (yet another BitTorrent client). BitTorrent protocol works like a give and take process, if you need to get something, you need to give something. In technical terms, if you upload data to a peer, you’ll be able to download data from them and the upload ratio is distributed throughout the swarm, so that the transfer rate can be shared by the swarm members.

Why is BitTyrant Selfish ?

Unlike most other BitTorrent clients, BitTyrant monitors upload speeds of the swarm members and gives more priority to those with higher upload speeds, which means will BitTyrant will dynamically increase the upload speed to those uploaders inorder to increase the download speeds. This magic can hurt BitTorrent users with lower upload speeds (most cable, DSL users will suffer).

If BitTyrant gets popular, it can hurt the entire torrent community, by decreasing the transfer rates. To counter BitTyrant, some users have started blacklisting this client from their servers.

Do you want to be selfish?
