Beware: Happy New Year Worm

A Happy New Year worm is being spread from 160 domain emails. The email arrives with “Happy New Year!” subject line and contains “postcard.exe” as an attachment, upon execution of the file, the worm will install several malicious codes including Tibs, Nwar, Banwarum and Glowa on your computer and then starts sending replicas of the same mail to all your contacts.

Although the worm requires user interaction to deploy, it can be potentially damaging because the user might think that the mail is a legitimate greeting mainly due of the “Happy New Year!” subject line and the sender’s address.

Its a general thumb rule that you shouldn’t execute any .exe file received via email because most of the times viruses are packed within a .exe file and sent to victims. Thesedays most email service providers like Gmail or Yahoomail doesn’t allow its users to attach executable files with emails.
