Microsoft together with AMD shipped free laptops loaded with Vista Ultimate to few A-list bloggers like Brandon LeBlanc, Scott Beale, Barb Bowman, Mauricio Freitas, Mitch Denny, Zen.Heavengames and few more.

Some bloggers received Ferrari 1000s while others received 5000s. Ferrari 5000s boasts AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core (2 Ghz) with 2Gb of DDR-2 RAM, AMD-ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 1.3 MP camera, HD-DVD Burner and a 160 GB SATA Drive. This laptop sell for around $2,299 (Rs 1,02,191)

Shall we consider this just as a Christmas present or a bribe? Well, here’s what Microsoft has to say:

All,

Let me take a minute to respond to some of these comments. Yes, Windows Vista and AMD sent out review computers to bloggers. Why? Because we believe in the power of community, we believe in our product, and we are partnering with AMD to give bloggers the best hardware experience we can.

I understand the concerns on ethics, and I share them. We have been up front that these are review pcs, and we encourage bloggers to disclose that. Here’s the language we used in the review outreach:

“Full disclosure - while I hope you will blog about your experience with the pc, you don’t have to. Also, you are welcome to send the machine back to us after you are done playing with it, or you can give it away on your site, or you can keep it. My recommendation is that you give it away on your site.”

I hope this information helps. We want to be fully transparent about what we are doing here.

Aaron Coldiron, Windows Vista

  1. The laptop looks good and so does its specs. But it is the OS that they load with it and the ones who are sending it in the first place that irks me.

But I prefer not to rant more here even though I am in quite a bit of nasty mood for undisclosable reason because I might be then tagged with the “those grapes are sour” kind of person.

    :p

Jokes aside, this does seem ambigous in terms of ethics and I do not want to say more than that.

  2. Thats good man …hope you receive one too..

  3. Vyoma: Yahoo wanted to gain some respect from Bloggers, so they organized BlogCamp, now Microsoft wants to gain some, so they are sending laptops to few of them. Its completely unethical, I feel

Vyoma: I hope they do send me a laptop. Wish me Luck !

  4. I read on digg that they were recalling the laptops or something

  5. Anirudh: No, They aren’t forcing them to send the laptops back. Read:

  6. [...] My friend, Thilak, wrote about how Microsoft and AMD are giving blogger’s laptops to test Window’s Vista out on.  And they aren’t just any old laptops, they are Ferrari’s. “Some bloggers received Ferrari 1000s while others received 5000s. Ferrari 5000s boast AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core (2 Ghz) with 2Gb of DDR-2 RAM, AMD-ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 1.3 MP camera, HD-DVD Burner and a 160 GB SATA Drive. 7. i wish you get one and give it away to one of the top commenters on your blog

  8. [...] On the other hand, TechCrunch wrote about this scenario and got their page vandalized by a Microsoft Employee. This isn’t something good for Microsoft; they can’t keep throwing stones at bloggers like Arrington. I know.. I know… Microsoft gave away free Laptops to A-List bloggers. [...]
