BSNL is spending nearly Rs 2,000 crores to setup broadband infrastructure which would enhance internet speeds upto 2 megabits per second and to setup 1000 WiMAX towers to bring nearly 20,000 - 30,000 villages where copper lines are not reachable under broadband connectivity by the mid 2007.

A K Sinha, CMD of BSNL spoke on their plans: “We will invest Rs 1200-1500 crores for expanding our broadband network in urban areas while about Rs 500 crores would be invested in rural areas.”

BSNL would still continue to provide cheap broadband starting at Rs 250 per month ($5.6). Currently BSNL’s broadband userbase is almost 1 million strong. With greater speeds and cheaper rates they hope to expand it by another 5 million broadband users by the end of 2007.

If everything goes as planned by BSNL, year 2007 will be marked in broadband history books for Indian consumers.

  1. “If everything goes as planned by BSNL, year 2007 will be marked in broadband history books for Indian consumers”. That’s what the problem is. Nothing goes fine in India due to the politicians. There is so much corruption.

  2. the speeds will remain same for users with unlimited data plan :(

  3. :(
I have one day of broadband left. *sniff*
But hey, 100mbps 20TB LAN Filesharing
It’s a tough choice to make

  4. Ha! I just hope they will be able to extend their service to my native village by the time I retire. I really want net connectivity during my last days of existance. :P

  5. Bsnl had been a really boon for me.Its 900 plus plan rocks. The other plan where they have limits to download sucks.I as charged heavily for no reason. So i got myself transfered to this scheme. Now no worries just pay 1000 bucks and you are set

  6. Phalgun: I agree with you

Vyoma: I guess broadband already covers your native village Puttur.

Ashish: Like Lovedeep said, chances exist that Home 900 users will have to stick onto the same 256 kbps speed. Only users who have bandwidth restrictions will be upgraded to 2 mbps and that defeats the purpose of an always on connection.
