Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or better know as just WiMAX is coming to India. According to Om Malik, BSNL made a major announcement that they would deploy WiMAX in six major cities in India. Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune are said to be on the list. On the other hand, VSNL is working on establishing wireless networks in 65 cities, which would later be expanded to 200 cities. Intel has planned WiMAX trials in Mumbai. Alcatel and Dishnet are also deploying their wireless networks in India.
For consumers WiMAX will offer speeds upto 2 megabits per second. Since the transmitting costs are high, the subscription cost would also be higher than your wired counterparts. Research firms Maravedis and Tonse Telecom India predict that WiMAX subscription base will reach 13 million by 2010. I’m glad that WiMAX is going to come to India.
