Wikipedia Founder, Jimmy Wales 2nd venture, Wikia kicked off OpenServing yesterday. Its a content driven free wiki hosting site, by “free” I don’t mean its not ad supported. It does have ads in it, but 100% of the revenue will go to the author of the content.
They’ll give you free bandwidth, free storage and you’ll have to give out your Adsense Publisher code while signing up. So, why are they giving all this for free? - According to Jimmy, they haven’t yet come up with a revenue model for OpenServing. They must be following YouTube’s footpath, do you remember those days when YouTube asked users to share video for free ?
Maybe be they’ll think of a nice revenue model, once content and traffic starts flowing in. I think its a nice strategy to give the advertising revenue to the writers, this will encourage masses to take this up seriously. It might grow as a paid Wikipedia.
As short demo has been put up. Ads are well placed to recieve maximum click throughs. They have Digg like layout with article voting system, even comments can be rated using up and down thumbs.

This must be costing them a fortune to run.
