Fighting a Splog – 33Rocker.com !!

From the past couple of weeks a guy called Karthik was annoying me through IM, he was asking me to make his theme (Fauxed) XHTML Complaint. I had initially agreed, but later I realized that he was just another spammer. His theme Fauxed is ripped from 5thirtyone

His blog is filled with content ripped from other blogs, Moreover he doesn’t give proper attributes to the original author. I politely asked him to give a credits, but he straight away refused and it forced me to take these counter measures

Ripped Articles:
Original: Creating a Job Board for your Blog is as Simple as 1,2,3
Ripped: Create a Job Board For Your Blog

Original: How to Make Firefox Look & Act like IE, Opera, Flock and Netscape
Ripped: Make Firefox Look Like IE, Opera, Flock or Netscape

I’m quite sure these are more ripped article, none of them look original. I was shocked to see Darren Rowse from Problogger.net linking to his ripped article, I’ve also spotted few other bloggers linking to his splog.

Spammer’s short Bio:

Name: Karthik
Email: coolkarthik88@gmail.com
Domain: http://33rockers.com
Address: Karthik,
5-184 “Ashwin”,
5th Main V.P Nagar,
Udupi, Karnataka – 576102

For more info, check out his Orkut profile or check out 33Rockers.com Whois. He has a Pagerank of 6 and a impressive Technorati Ranking (It think its due Fauxed).

My friend Sindhu and few other Bloggers faced a similar problem out of this guy, luckily that guy is already busted out of AdSense and I’m planning to send a DMCA report to Google and few other search engines to kill traffic out of his blog. Once the traffic stops flowing in, he’ll run out of air to breath. I’ve also notified his host regarding this copyright infringement, lets see what comes up.

Please notify me if you’ve spotted any spammer stealing my posts.

Update: Fauxed theme is ripped from Derek’s 5ThirtyOne v2.0 !! + Check out what Derek has to say about Karthik

There is no copyright infringement. It’s just bad Karma. Your posts are not copyrighted.

I would not consider those as splogs, because the articles chosen for his blog seem to be really choosed by the guy. He copy and paste articles that he finds interesting editing some bits of the thing and publishing as his own articles. It’s not splog because he really delivers relevant articles.

  • http://utombox.com Utom

    He is a shameless blogger!

  • http://timeforchange.typepad.com ~rick

Thanks for the heads up!! Exposure is the best defense for these types of individuals..

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak

Sérgio Rebelo: Ripping his favorite Articles without giving any credits to the original author is considered as spamming. isn’t it?

More over he received link back from few hifi bloggers, whereas I should have got those

Do you think they are really close, I couldn’t even spot a change

  • http://33rockers.com Karthik

not a problem dude.. all the copied stuff will be deleted soon..

  • http://33rockers.com Karthik

Hey thilak.. I never really thought of this. I’ll tell you what, I wanted some nice content for my blog and being a programmer myself copying and pasting became a habit.. Anyways I plan to give a public apology soon.. And I have also deleted the copied posts..

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Here’s a little fuel to add to the fire: http://5thirtyone.com/archives/617

I gave up in my attempts to deal with that individual. The poor excuse that someone else was ripping content – not the original blog author – was pathetic at best.

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak

Derek: He has no partners or whatsoever, He is a solo blogger on his blog.

In his previous comments he says, he is a programmer himself, Even a lamer can change the author’s name on style.css lol

Can CSS be called a Programming ? Even if he created the theme on his own, why would he ask me to make Fauxed XHTML Complaint ?

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Oh everyone knows it’s a one man show over there. He just tries to justify his actions – when caught – by placing the blame on others.

  • http://www.maxpower.ca/what-bloggers-can-learn-from-plagiarist-karthik-kastury-of-33rockerscom/2006/11/03/ What bloggers can learn from plagiarist Karthik Kastury of 33Rockers.com at MaxPower

[...] I hope by now it is obvious that Karthik Kastury is a plagiarist, someone who steals the words and idea’s of others and claims them as their own. I’m not the first to bring this up, and won’t be the last seeing as how Kathik hasn’t learned yet. After 5thirtyone.com revealed that 33rockers had stolen content and posted it online with accrediting the source, Karthik claimed that it was his assistant who did the evil deed: I’ll tell you what derek. I had no intention of scrapping your content. It was my asssistant who was doing all this. I know this sounds pretty ridiculous but i am really sorry for that. [...]

    Ow! Such a disgrace!

I lived almost my entire life in a town next to Udupi, where this Kartik hails from – and thus I find it insulting.

Udupi and the nearby places, south until Mangalore is supposed to home for many educated and respectable families. They are known for their humbleness and modesty. This continuous shameless act of Kartik is a real disgrace and I cannot think of any means of retribution.

Man! It has been a log time since I picked by ‘blog-pen’, but I definetly need to make an example out of this. I will not hide that he is from Udupi, as I will not be the one to shove a skeleton into the closet.

  • http://www.wisetome.com Vyoma

And Sérgio Rebelo, all the posts here at Tech Buzz are copyrithed. You can see the ‘©2006 – Tech-Buzz.net’ at the bottom of the webpage.

  • http://sergiorebelo.com/twodotfive Sérgio Rebelo

I don’t want to defend this guy, I don’t like people who just copy and give no attribution to where they have copied from. When I see an article I like in another blog and I want to post about that same issue because I think it is relevant to my readers, I usually state the source and try to make a brand new text describing the event/service/whatever.

What I was trying to say is that I don’t consider this spam. I think this is some kind of theft. Spam is when you drop a lot of irrelevant content with no criteria, like the scrapper blogs. It doesn’t seem to be the case of 33rockers. He is just a shameless thief.

I think you got pissed of because he could get the links from the A bloggers, but that can happen even if he had just saw the story on your blog, makes a new text for that.

@Vyoma: you’re right, but I’m not sure about the legality of the copyright. I don’t think it is enough to just drop a line saying the texts are copyrighted. You have to register the content somewhere. But that’s just a rant, because I really don’t know about that.

  • http://33rockers.com Karthik

33rockers.com is no more.. I accept my defeat.. I hope to be back with a new blog pretty soon and I swear I am not going to plagiaries stuff anymore..

Thanks for all the insult.. I accept defeat

  • http://www.WiseTome.com Vyoma

@Karthik, good for you. There are a lot many things that happen in this world, and a huge subset of that will interest you. Put some effort in doing a bit of research and writing orginal content when you blog. Using other people’s work is not at all a sin, but doing that and not giving credit to the original author is a shameless act.

@Sérgio Rebelo, I will have to agree with you on the fact that it is not Spam – it is just a case of theft. Now about Copyright – it is a simple law, and like the ® and â„¢, getting a © does not require one to register any where. A person has the Copyright over any work right from the moment of its creation even if no copyright notice is mentioned. It is a different case with ® and â„¢, where one needs to apply and register it somewhere.

Hence just dropping a line saying it is copyrighted is more than enough.

  • http://sergiorebelo.com/twodotfive Sérgio Rebelo

@Vyoma: thanks for clarifying the copyright issue to me. I wasn’t aware of that.

  • M

Everything you create is automatically copyrighted; you don’t have to register it. Registering it helps, but it isn’t required. You don’t even need a copyright notice on the page anywhere, in an email, on an article, etc. Your copyright exists from the moment of creation.

  • http://ajaydsouza.com/ Ajay D’Souza

Sorry didn’t read this post in detail earlier, until I came across the same on MaxPower.

I know exactly what it feels like to have your articles being ripped off!

It happened to me a while back and I managed to get the site shut down.

But, this is worse, because here he is manually stealing content without attribution.

And “being a programmer myself copying and pasting became a habit” is such a lame excuse.

I surprised you didn’t issue a DMCA notification to his host and get his site shut down!

  • http://ajaydsouza.com/ Ajay D’Souza

Btw, forgot to mention. Get hold of a Creative Commons button for your site like I have on mine. Also try out the Feed copyrighter plugin by Angsuman.

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak

Ajay: I just mailed a DMCA report to Google this morning, The plagiarist gave up and shut the site himself

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak

Karthik just scrapped on my Orkut Profile:

no probs dude.. I dont care if i get banned from gooogle.. nywayz i’ll be back with a better blog at the same url and I will regain all the reputation..

I know you had to do all this just because I was featured on problogger and not you.. To tell you what I have known darren for months and he is quite a regular reader of my blog..

Hahah.. Now he is hurting Darren’s reputation by says he was a regular reader of his splog. lol

    Darren are you sleeping ?

  • http://www.wisetome.com Vyoma

Does he even know the meaning of being a ‘Pro’ (as in Professional)? Karthik, understand that a Professional has ethics, and what you did was way out of the bounds of ethical behaviour.

  • http://33rockers.com Karthik

I am back dude… I am sorry for everything that Has happened…

No I am not insulting Darren here… I am just telling the truth… I thought Darren was a reader on my blog after the group writing project..

[...] This post is a direct result of some discussions I had with Thilak over at TechBuzz. There was an incident of plagiarism by a person, and Thilak could, after some effort get a public apology. And later, we had some discussion over at another thread of his, where a harmless looking picture of Bart Simpson was used. [...]

  • http://ajaydsouza.com/ Ajay D’Souza

    Thilak, did you inform Problogger?

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak

Ajay: Yes I did, but never got a response back, can you try to contact him (Plz ?)

  • http://33rockers.com warren

    hi all-

I am the new owner of 33rockers.com.. Unfortunately, I bought this site without knowing the controversy surrounding it. I am in the process of cleaning out the uncredited posts and will continue to do so as people let me know where there are issues.

    thnx,
    Warren

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak

Warren: Ouch, you committed a big mistake… How did you pay ? Why don’t you ask for a refund ?

I think we should write about it.

  • http://33rockers.com warren

    hi thalik-

I knew there were problem posts, but that he had subsequently been removed. But upon firther reading, I see that it was more widespread and blatant than I had originally thought.

Anyway, thanks for the concern — I don’t mind a little clean up job, since I get to meet some kewl bloggers along the way. I hope that you guys will help me rebuild the reputation of 33rockers.com minus Karthik.

Even though I have been a web developer since ’99, I am new to the blogging world… so anything you guys can do to help me out is much appreciated. I think that you’ll find that I will be a positive addition to the community.

    peace,
    Warren

  • http://www.technobeta.com Mr.Cool

    This is most unfortunate !

Didn’t know someone would actually do something like that, and then do it all over again !

And i see he’s from the same place as i am. Shame :(

This reminds me of something that happened on CHIP sometime back ! lol

  • http://technospot.net/blogs/ Ashish Mohta

Wow the biggest post comments i have ever seen lol.

Well it is wrong to copy anybodys content without crediting him. That i knew long back.If you are just here to copy back , seriously you dont have a place.Yiu can stay but you wont gain anything other than money.

Blogging has gone beyond money making. Its more of respect a blogger has than he earns money. You are credited to what you have done, it should be original.Thats what you gain, respect and honour.

People who copy should be exposed but i have a suggestion. We all should keep our tone neutral. This is your home.Dont make it dirty.

    Cool down

  • http://digitalmail.blogspot.com atul
