Why Digg Top Users Always Stay on The Top ?

You might already be aware of the fact that nearly 67% of Digg’s Frontpage is controlled by Digg Top Users, Have you ever questioned yourself why?

After few close analysis over some top digg profiles, I found out that most of them have the habit of cross digging each other. They too follow the same method as we do (ask over friends to digg), but they can do it in large scale, simply because those profiles are followed by large number of loyal diggers who faithfully digg stories submitted by them.

So if your lucky enough to have a friend who is a top digg user and if he diggs article submitted by you, then the probability of making it to the frontpage is higher. Its all about networking !!, so start making buddies on Digg. Add me as your Digg Buddy (lol)

But it still leaves a big question mark on our face, Does Digg follow democratic system of voting?

    Was Digg democratic?

Very interesting analysis, Thilak. I think that Digg users do not realize that by voting for their friends’ posts they will trump other posts that might be interesting, maybe more interesting. At the time of this comment there were 11/14 frontpages made by some guy named aaaz – he has pages upon pages of front page posts – and has 400 friends.

So concluding, Digg does NOT have a democratic system of voting – my submitted stories’ diggs went up as I befriended top Digg guys. Well, in voting theory, it does, but in reality it does not as people almost *mindlessly* vote for articles their friends dugg.

Nowadays I use digg (I submitted an article about Itanium 2 being released – maximum 10 diggs much less a front page) and Reddit, which is proving to be a better service for tech AND other news (though I do realize Digg has other news as well.)

    Good article.

Ajay: Digg was meant to be democratic. Thanks for adding me as your friend.

Steven: Reddit is hell lot democratic, I had also drafted it on this post, but later I decided not to because it would get off topic

It’s true, keep a good circle of friends and watch IRC for thilak’s diggs ;)

Cross-digging works, it may not be how digg.com wants things to work, but they can’t really stop it.

I realized that. But even then, on the day of submission and following few days, I have seen a lot of traffic coming in from there.

Actually reddit.com is even easier to manipulate and can lead to diggs. you only need about 10 friends in reddit to get some nice traffic
