Nokia Develops a Bluetooth Competitor

Nokia on Tuesday announced that they have developed a open source “Wibree” wireless technology, which would take on Bluetooth in the near future. Wibree is the first open technology to connect between Computers, Cellphone and other micro powered device. Wibree uses a fraction of the power of other radio solutions, and is easily integrated with Bluetooth. Like Bluetooth, Wibree would provide connectivity upto 30 feet (10 meters) with  a speed of 1 Mbps and would operate in 2.4 Ghz band.

The first commercial version of this specification would be released somewhere around spring, next year. Nokia also plans to market this technology as a addon to Bluetooth. I think it would take another 4 – 5 years for the technology to popularize among devices until then Bluetooth would serve us.
