The popular peer-to-peer file sharing network, eDonkey has been cracked down by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and asked MetaMachine (The company which gave birth to eDonkey) to pay $30 Million USD to settle claim on mass copyright infringement.
MetaMachine has agreed to stop distributing eDonkey, eDonkey 2000 and Overnet. However this agreement won’t have any impact on the network because eDonkey runs on a completely decentralized platform and will live as long as people keep using it
If you try to visit eDonkey website, you will recieve a short warning from RIAA:
If you steal music or movies, you are breaking the law.
Courts around the world — including the United States Supreme Court –
have ruled that businesses and individuals can be prosecuted for illegal
downloading. You are not anonymous when you illegally download copyrighted material.
Your IP address has been logged.
Respect the music, download legally.
Most of the eDonkey users have switched onto the Open Source variant of eDonkey known as eMule, which still continues to develop.
If RIAA thinks eDonkey is illegal, then what about Rapidshare and Megaupload ??
