Motorola SLVR L7 review

Here comes the ideal mobile solution for all those who are not in love with clamshells, but do like Motorola Razr’s slim design. Motorola has decided to continue the path marked by its popular Razr by launching a new line of slim phones with classic construction. The best equipped among them is the new Motorola SLVR L7.

Key features

  • slim design
  • well elaborated
  • brilliant display
  • memory card slot

Main disadvantages

  • strange keypad layout
  • confusing menu
  • slow response
  • poor-quality camera

It all started with Motorola V3 Razr. Till the moment this model was launched no one would ever even dare think of such a slim mobile phone. The Razr model was a huge success and managed to get on top of the slim handsets. At present, all major manufacturers literally compete in introducing thin-construction devices. There is no wonder that Motorola gets back with 3 new models of the same line.

Apart from clamshells, it has also presented several phones with classic construction. It has already been some time since one of them, Motorola L6, hit the market. However if you find it insufficient in terms of functions, then you may want to try a higher-class model – Motorola SLVR L7, officially presented at CeBIT 2005.

It can hardly be thinner

There is no doubt that the most important advantage of the L7 model is its slimness – mere 12 mm. The other two dimensions are a bit larger than what is acceptable in the group of small phones, but even so Motorola SLVR L7 can be regarded as a very small device. In other words, 114 x 49 x 12 mm. The phone weighs 85 grams. The L7 model is narrower compared to Motorola Razr, due to which it goes perfectly onto one’s palm. All areas of the keypad are easy to reach by thumb.

It is really thin…

Motorola L7 has a perfectly elaborated construction. It would not give out a single creak, even if pressed quite hard. The lock of the rear cover is located at the very top of the back side, above the camera, and is thus very strong. The phone didn’t show any spaces or margins during the tests. The construction benefits a lot from the absence of removable covers too.

Could that be aluminum?

The entire phone is made of thin metal plates, except for the keypad and the display. It looks like aluminum but polished in black. Unfortunately, finger prints remain pretty visible all over the device, including the display. The top button line of the keypad is located right below the display, so the chance that fingerprints may be kept away from the display surface is minor. You will have no other choice but to wipe it again and again. In this respect, a special wiping cloth would have come in extremely handy, if included in the original package of the phone.

The design outlook of Motorola L7 catches the eye immediately. The front side of the device is totally flat. The only elements that bulge slightly are the main control button and the logo of the manufacturer located above the display. The same logo is to be found on the rear side of the phone, which also constitutes the battery cover. The grid of the loud speaker is located beneath the logo. The lens of the built-in camera is seated in a black trapezium with a silver frame in the very top of the rear cover. Btw, it is not protected and will probably get scratched quickly.

It’s a very nice phone, but there are several major issues. I have no option to save text messages to my phone’s memory. Since the SIM memory is small, I can only hold a couple dozen text messages. The phone forwards the calls to your voicemail after only 15-20 seconds, which is ten seconds shorter than my old Samsung phone. There’s no option to change this. 20 seconds might sound like enough, but it helps out a lot to have the extra 10, especially if you’re in another room or doing something else and can’t pick up the phone right away.

The worst thing about this phone is that in the user manual, it explains how to store texts to your phone’s memory (although it should by default). But, the menu option is simply not there. Calls to Cingular and Motorola yielded no help, as they basically read to me the same instructions that are in the manual. It’s not just my phone, though, because I have tried to find the setting in all SLVRs that I have come across, with no success.

You have to store things like ringtones, pictures, and phone numbers on your actual phone memory in order to use them for ringtones, picture IDs, and backgrounds. This is kind of stupid considering the phone comes with a 512 MB TransFlash card, and the phone has a mere 6 MB in comparison.

The vibrate ringer is very weak. It is so weak that at times, I do not even feel it, especially when I’m driving.

Also, when you use a bluetooth headset, it seems like the phone switches your ringtone to the standard one. I am not sure why, but it does.

Apart from these illogical faults, the phone is very good. I get good reception, the speaker is very loud and clear for ringtones and music (but not very loud when in speakerphone), the display is bright and clear, it works perfectly with my Jabra JX10 headset, and it looks great. The keypad isn’t too bad once you get used to it. I text message a lot, and I can type (iTAP mode) and dial almost as well as I could with my old Samsung (T9 mode) phone.

If anyone has any info about my problems with the phone, please let me know.

I agree with you, The main issue with Motorola Handsets are their ringtones.

This phone is great, the camera aint the best, but then its a phone, and if you want a fanstatic camera, get a digital camera not a phone! Everything else aboutt his phone is great, its cheapi(ish) and only rich people like Chris BArnett can afford a…

    hi
the phone is pretty decent. am facing a critical problem of storing mess (sms).. if any one have a software to store sms in memory card in L7 moto do forward me pls my email id is amit_mardia@yahoo.co.in

  • MikeyG

    Hi,
I really like the phone after using it for a couple of days but I do have some issues with the email client.
Any email sent from the phone has a time and date stamp of 00:00 1/1/1970. This basically causes it to appear right at the end of anyone’s inbox and be blocked by every spam filter ever made.

Using IMAP there doesn’t seem to be any way to get mail for a folder other than the inbox.
Finally, there’s no way to add a new trusted SSL certificate. I don’t have hundreds of dollars to pay for certificate from verisign so every time it connects to my mailserver it throws up a dialog complaining about my self-signed server certificate.

BTW, you guys are lucky – I didn’t get any memory card included. But the phone was free on ?20pm contract.

  • Cheese

Can i use itunes as a ringer? I want to assign songs to callers.

  • Andrew

Intoflatlines – i have an L6 and had the same prob re the SMS. To store it to the phone, i had to open up the inbox, highlight a message, click the option key (middle one just under the screen) and then go to message setup.

There should be an option there called “Store To” Phone/SIM

  • intoflatlines

Yes, according to the manual, there should be the setting in that menu. Unfortunately, as I was recently informed by Motorola, this option is not available in the United States. Which doesn’t really make any sense.

Recently, another problem has appeared with my SLVR L7. Speed/entry # 17 in my phonebook gets deleted all the time. When I tried to add someone new to my phonebook, it sometimes placed it in #17, even if there was already an entry stored to that location. It happened randomly, but I would say that if I added a new entry, I had a 50% chance of it deleting whatever was stored in #17. I stored a “?” for the name and I believe a “5″ for the number in entry #17, and since then I have not had that problem anymore. It is very strange, though.

is it possible to record the calls on SLVR L7….. for that matter i would like to know if it is possible to record telephone conversation on any java operated mobile… please help

  • http://www.blog.tech-buzz.info Thilak

No Rahul, I don’t think it is possible

  • john_miller

hey idiots, stop taking out small faults from this phone. l7 is indeed a nice phone. u will find small problems even with the costliest phones. ACTUALLY, THIS PHONE IS THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY.

  • intoflatlines

    john_miller,

The L7 is a nice phone, but I doubt you would be calling everyone “idiots” if many of your important stored phone numbers are lost forever because the phone keeps deleting them. Yes, you could write down the numbers right away but isn’t it kind of stupid to have to carry around a pen and paper along with your SLVR just so that you don’t lose a number?

Ok it supports it. Now how do you make a song from you iTunes your ringtone?

  • http://www.blog.tech-buzz.info Thilak

Using the free audio editor Audacity, cut down your choice of MP3 to 15 seconds or so and transfer the tone to your cell phone via cable, Bluetooth or email.

Ok it supports it. Now how do you make a song from you iTunes your ringtone?

    It doesn’t support it.

What it does support is using an MP3 as a ringtone. Not the same thing.

  • intoflatlines

Yeah, you can’t use AAC/WMA etc files as your ringtone. What I do is take a song that I have in mp3 format and shorten it to around 30 seconds. I then save it at a really low bitrate (audio and put your file there. Then after you disconnect your phone, go to My Stuff (on the phone) and Sounds. Find the ringtone you just made. It should be in the microSD card, so you may have to switch your storage device to find it. Highlight the ringtone and press the menu button. Select “Move” and move it to your phone’s memory. Then, switch your storage device back to Phone and you can use the mp3 as your ringtone.

Wow I messed up that last post. Here’s what it should say:

is everyone sure that you can’t store your text messages onto your memory card. because it does get very annoying to just keep erasing them after a dozen or so texts

  • john

can i make my motorola key pad change colors

  • intoflatlines

    #22 john:
According to Motorola tech support, the option to switch storage devices for text messages is not available to US/North America (I forget which) phones, despite the setting being clearly explained in the instruction manual. Also, after days of searching, I gave up because I couldn’t find the setting anywhere. When I was using my old SIM card, which was a 32K from two years ago I believe, I was only able to hold around 17 text messages before I got a low memory warning. I talked to Motorola and Cingular tech support and one thought that it was the SIM card’s fault while the other didn’t. Anyway, I decided to go get a new 64K SIM card, since the never gave me one when I got the phone. I got the SIM for free, and now I can hold 50+ text messages without a problem. The reason why I don’t know how many it can hold in total is because I routinely delete my inbox if I notice that I have a buildup of texts. I have gotten to 50-60 messages without a low memory warning. So, to make this long rant short, I think that you have an old or outdated 32K SIM card. Go to a Cingular store or whatever service provider you use and ask if you can deactivate your old SIM and get a new one. I think that this should be a free service.

    #23:

    Practically speaking, no.

In regards to my #19 and #20 post, I guess that this site doesn’t like the “greater than” sign, probably confusing it with an attempt to insert HTML code. FINALLY, this is what my post about making mp3 files into ringtones should read:

Memory was the issue, that seems to be resolved but now no sound from the speaker at all. However, using a headset I am still able to listen to all my music. Seriously confused now, nobody seems to be able to help on this matter. Any ideas ?

I keep trying to save my shortened mp3s and use them as ringtones, but because of itunes I don’t think I can. When I switch my storage device there are no music files that show up. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks.

  • Duncan Frissell

I like the phone generally. Particularly the speaker.

Rash- My speaker stopped working after 7-8 months. I overslept 2 mornings because I didn’t know it was dead and no alarm…

I shook the phone a few times (while running an mp3) and it started morking again (after initial crackling). I’ll see if I wake up tomorrow.

  • Britt

I’ve actually had no real problems with this phone. Occasionally the speaker goes out and the other caller cannot hear me, but that seems to be the only thing. The camera quality is actually pretty good for a cell phone. Just don’t use the zoom too much. The iTunes are great, and I’m not sure what the big problem with the menu screen is. All you have to do is set it up to your liking. I’ve enjoyed mine.
