4 Reason why BSNL Dataone Sucks

This is my first month with BSNL broadband and I already know 4 reasons why BSNL dataone sucks.
1. Dumb Engineers: When they came to install the modem at my place I had to teach then how to go to “My Network Places”.
2. Poor Customer Support: If you have any problems then don’t even dare to call them because then won’ t help you, instead they will you give some telephone numbers and ask you to help yourself
3. Faulty Network: Most of the times the ADSL Link Lamp in you modem won’t glow from hours
4. Bandwidth Limit: If you pay 250 bucks a month you can use only 400 MB. If you pay 500 bucks you bet 1 GB [+ 2 AM to 8 AM free bandwidth]. They don’t even have any plans to introduce unlimited plan.

    So Here?s is a yet another compilation of several reasons why BSNL DataOne Sucks! [My Friend Sent this to me]
    DataCaps/Speed/Pricing
    1. DataOne is capped.
    2. DataOne offer Happy Hours but on wierd timings.
    3. BSNL has a 64k Upload line. We are forced to be leechers. I got banned 4 times in 2 private torrent site.
    4. BSNL is not that cheap as you guys think. Airtel has the same plan as our 256kbps. They have 5gb transfer limit and happy hours from 9-8.
    5. BSNL won?t ever change any existing plans. Dataone was launched 15 months back and still we have same old plan. Maybe at Jan, 2005 the plans looked attractive but no longer.
    6. They (customer care personnels and exchange engineers) first say that July, 2005 was also in the fully unlimited period (Jan-June 2005). Later after 3 months we got emails from them. We had to pay the amount in the ?special supplementary? bill.
    7. 1 GB transfer limit sucks. 1 GB won?t even last 9 hours if I have a unlimited connection. Who are they trying to fool? 256kbps and 400mb for 250rs? If a person has limited usage, why would he want to have a 400gb capped line and pay 2rs (or 1.4rs) for every mb?
    Billing
    8. DataOne billing is not transparent
    9. DataOne often send you overbills
    10. You contact your local telephone exchange for any billing complaints, they ask you to contact DE of your SSA
    11. You contact your SSA DE for billing complaints, he simply says that all billing are done from pune, so give me a complaint and wait. And they does nothing
    Helpdesk/Customer Support
    12. BSNL people knows nothing about DataOne
    13. DataOne has got a Toll-Free number where no one picks up the phone
    15. Dataone does not a a proper complaint cell/contact person/helpdesk in action.
    16. BSNL has a ?customer care? toll free number where it?s fully automatic. I have never heard a human voice, 99% the answering machine will keep you company.
    OS/Browser/Website
    17. BSNL do not support no other OS than MS Windows.
    18. BSNL provides modem which contains Linux drivers for Linux OS that existed 2 years back.
    19. BSNL provides you with 100 pages os usage statistics every month, still leaving you ignorant about your usage
    20. BSNL think all it?s customers are M.COM graduates
    21. DataOne usage page doesn?t support worlds second largest used Web Browser, Firefox
    22. BSNL site needs chinese language pack to make it work without errors.
    Technical Problems
    23. DataOne depends on your telephone, If telephone is faulty, dataone is too
    24. Once dataone is down, dont expect it to get repaired before a week
    25. Dataone has several complaints with telephone usages, like in someplaces it just disconnects whenever an incoming/outgoing call is attended
    26. In some places it denies working of plus features of telephone like call waiting, CLIP etc
    27. You need to have strange thing done to have BSNL connected. 27th and 28th points highlight that. Sometimes you need to switch on the router first and then your PC else you?ll get a BSOD!
    28. I can?t connect to internet if I don?t have a media player playing some songs. My Dataone loves listening to music.
    29. I can?t open Bitme.org.
    Security
    30. Dataone allows anyone to access critical private data like usage statistics using a simple VB tool (like shaplus software)
    31. Dataone forces usage of proxy
    32. Using Dataone dynamic IP, many sites may ban/block you
    33. Dataone allows spammers to reside in their network
    34. Dataone allows spywares in their network
    35. Dataone does not offer security for user accounts
    36. Dataone does not binds userids with their curresponding telephone Nos, so that anyone with an account can use any other account in any telephone
    37. When we get a new account, if we know the userID, anyone can to know the password as well.
    Health
    38. BSNL internet connection, indirectly affects you mentally. You get sleeping disorders, loose appetite (!), mental stress, insulted and banned at various private torrent sites, pressure to browse within 1gb, fear of over billing at the end of the month,etc..

    I sympathize with you friend. Their customer service is the worst, I ever experienced.

    I have a CellOne post paid connection and they signed me up for OneIndia calling plan and sent me a bill a Rs.600 (charges for the last month and the current month). When I called their customer support agent, she was a very rude girl who told me that I sent an sms to signup for this service, whereas this is wrong. I did not send them any sms.

    Moreover, the ridiculous thing here is that they put a charge of Rs.600 on my phone bill but did not activate the service. When I was unable to make any STD call, I called them and inquired about it and they said that I have to deposit an amount of Rs. 1,000 to start off with this service. But these stupids charged me Rs.600 without activating the service.

    Overall, I really had a very bad, infact the worst experience of customer service with BSNL. I decided to cancel my CellOne mobile connection and will even cancel the landline phone. Better go with Tata Indicom or Reliance landlines, as I believe their customer service would not be so bad as these guys provided.

    i have a bit query, if anyone using the paln 500, he gets a free download time from 2am to 8am right[i.e he can browse & download as much as he can & every thing will be free right]

    now guys i ‘m not fighting u or loyal to bsnl just some thing i like to put forward

    i have ask some of my friends who r using cable broadband service but their download speed is very varibale where as bsnl is not so much.

    for exp. when we download anything through bsnl broadband the download speed is 30-35kbps, day or night

    where as in case of cable the download speed is 17kbps in day & 8-9kbps in night, yes that to in the free browsing period [1-7am]

    Bsnl
    plane 500 / 1 gb download & upload / free from 2-8am/ extra mb/1.20
    modem 1200 one time & instalation chagre 250 & A registration fee of Rs. 100

    Cable in our area
    plane 600 / i gb download & unlimited upload / extra mb/1 / & also free cable[which generaly cost us around 250pm]
    modem with instalation 1750 & security deposit 500 & taxes extra

    so plz guys help me out since i’m going to be a heavy downloader from nex month. which one i should opt for.

    Guys BSNL sucks but as far as I am concerned its the speediest connection I can get in my town khammam (Heard of it ?) Its in Andhra pradesh.
    The tarrif really sucks one have to admit it .
    ABOUT OPENING dataone page in Linux .
    You can download opera and select appear as ie 6 for that dumb website!

    One thing which really sucks abt Dataone is Bandwidth
    They even count Uploads !! LOL

    if i’m not , mistaken this news was published way back in sept05 when new plans where introduce.
    only one thing has change now a day they don’t take security charges i.e 500 in two plans one is 250 & other is 500.

    the only thing consern me that they are giving us overbill which are more than affordable..

    We got a 256kbs line with a initial free two month package. The download limit is 0.4 GB and we would we charged above it. We were told that we could check how much we had downloaded at the bsnl website. But it never works and no bsnl support either.

    Same thing happened with me also. Their support is very bad. I wanted to change the change my scheme from Home 250 to Home 500.

    —I applied for 500 plan.It was confirmed by BSNL guys twice.So I start downloading every damn things during 2-8 happy hours and they give me a RS -10,000 bill.And by parents have been screaming at me ever since!
    What are these guys trying to prove?

    I too faced so many problems with this STUPID BSNL people. they dont even tell what is the problem, because they dont even know. Everytime I call they say ” I will check” and nothing more than that but they are smart to send “Problem Solved” message. I dont know how to deal with these people. I can say only one thing BSNL people are “IRRESPONSIBLE IDIOTS”

    DataOne is very good for the simple reason that it is our very own Broadband connection. To tell you the truth, I am on 256 Kbps speed package, with a 400 MB download limit. But I get download speeds around 312 Kbps very often, except during certain times of the day, when it goes down to 60 kbps. I hear 128 kbps online radio, and watch a lot of movie trailers in very good quality. Disconnections are very few. It is rare. And, I stay 5 km away from the Telephone Exchange! My Internet bill comes to around 350-400 Rupees. The connection I have in Bangalore is excellent. My friends too experience the same great service. Keep it up BSNL! I never had to call customer service even once. The guys who came to install took 12 mins to finish. My business account at a software park is not that efficient with a much higher speed. BSNL is Best Speed, Nice Line! :-)

    my mama works in BSNL mobile and shez no better frankly shez jus as ignorant as any other employee of bsnl about their own loopholes. the only reason why we use BSNL is because its goverment has stability.

    guys complain about no new plans look at this way thats one of the methods of stability. my bes pal abi uses airtel, they choosed airtel as they had this lucrative plan of free calls on the phone along with unlimited net. within a month of the installation, that plan was scrapped and a new plan with no free calls and more tax on the billing arrived.

    problem is we cant question airtel why it changes tariff plans so often with BSNL you can, you CAN sue them big time, coz its government, and you are a consumer.

    as for the those security concerns on accessing username / pass , getting banned and a meagre 1 gb….people am with you on this one. :) count me in.

    @Sindhu: I always thought it’d be easier to “sue” a private company than take action against a government branch. Given the amount of red tape I have to wade through just to get a driver’s licence, I don’t even want to hazard a guess about what it’d take to successfully take BSNL to court (provided I wanted to). Not subscribing to crap ISPs helps, though :d

    Hey guys, thanx God this thread is active. Please help me. I got data 1 connection in july. Had ticked 900 plan in the form. On august 1 I changed it to 500 plan. I viewed the data one site. It says I hav been using start up plan i.e. 250. I hav downloaded 50 gbs. Tell me how much bill i m going to get i.e around 900 x 3 or 1 lakh. I hav the memo in which it is clearily written “Home 900 UL”.

    When i went to change the plan in h.o the man had my customer number and using it he got my details and it said i m going on with 900 plan.

    Please help. I m going to take the bill tommorow.

    they told me bill wil be issued according to 900 plan. At my place v hav to issue of bill certificate. while enquiring abt the plan thing they told me to issue it and submit or my bill wont be issued. lol i wil hav no bills. and before they wake up i wil get my connection off.

    If Broadband Installation charges of Rs 250/- are fully exempted in case of option “I will install myself”
    For satisfactory working of B/B what is 1) the limit of drowire length from DP. 2) Exact limit of length (Cable+dropwire) of cable from the Exchange.

    i am using dataone 500 plan for last one year and didnt have any problem at all. i never got the speed less then 240 kbps. i schedule my download for the period between 2-8 am and use to download around 4 to 5 gb per month. the people who post comments against bsnl are surely hired peoples of private isps.

    I agree with Thilak. BSNL is not providing a very good service. I had opted for annual payment of Home 500 plans, still they have sent Rs. 590/- in my phone bill.

    No customer care service is of BSNL.
    No support to Linux – I like most.
    I dont like much to IE, but they dont support Opera , mozilla or FF.
    They dont leave any choice to me.

    256kbps = 256 kilo bits per second & not 256 kilo bytes per second.

    I have 2 (A AND B) DATAONE ACCOUNTS. Till last night i was able to connect internet BOTH .

    But right now i was unable to connect to B account, eventhough the password and other network things are same.
    The problem persisting and issuing a error message

    ERROR 691 access was denied because password / username was invalid on the domain.

    TO WHOM SO EVER THIS MAY CONCERN

    The exact words of SMS is as follows:-
    “On this auspicious day I pray to god that your children die of the worst cancer”.

    This I belive has landed in a cell phone that is with Mr.Pitchumani of the Virugambakkam Exchange.

    This is to bring to your notice that an official apology has been given in writing to the local police station addressing the inspector and Mr.Pitchumani.

    It was out of my the pain from loosing my job with my employer for reasons that I was not able to have Internet access from home in time.
    I regret applying this phone line and broadband with you.
    I should have applied with Airtel, where If they did not have the Internet up and running in 24hrs from the order released the concerned official will face internal charges.
    Shame on BSNL that they still let loose their employees. If not they would have done their job in time, saving my job and also will never show the guts to take money from my mother after sending me to Remand.

    I was put behind bars at the police station. I was made nude and kept in remand for several hours.
    It was cleverly during this time the BSNL employees went to my house and installed the phone, threatned my mother saying they will put me in lot of trouble and extorted Rs.700/-

    They even adviced my mother to visit the police station and bribe a police man whom they knew so they may release me.

    I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS DAY OR BSNL FOR PUTTING ME IN SUCH AN INSULT.
    LUCKILY THE INSPECTOR WHO ARRIVED BY EVENING GOT INVOLVED IN THE CASE AND FOUND OUT THAT THE CASE AGAINST ME WAS A FALSE ALLEGATION AND WARNED BOTH THE SIDES.

    YOU MAY PLEASE VERIFY ALL THE DOCUMENTS FROM THE LOCAL POLICE STATION.

    SHAME ON YOU BSNL AND ITS CARELESS EMPLOYEES.

    PLEASE KEEP THAT RS.700/- WITH YOUR SELF BUY SOME SWEETS TO CELEBRATE MY FIRST EVER LEGAL ARREST.

    TO WHOM SO EVER THIS MAY CONCERN AT BSNL

    I applied for a new broadband connection based on confirmation from local telephone exchange that I will get the connection in two working days.
    There is a junction box inside our campus where another 5 new connections can be connected, which again was confirmed by the lineman and Paranthaman.

    I applied on : 9th January 2007 and paid Rs. 1900/- as the initial fee.

    Order Number.: 07 N252765 Dated 9th Jan 2007.

    The next day Paranthaman from BSNL of Virugambakkam exchange confirmed that the order has reached him and he can do it the same day or next day morning.

    I waited on 10th evening and 11th morning.

    I still did not get any response.

    I tried reaching the following people since 12th Jan 2007 but in vain.
    (Probably I should have gone straight to the telephone exchange to meet them…)
    1. Paranthaman – 2377 4646
    2. Pitchumani – 23773000 / 9444979488
    3. Sankaran – 24819000

    None of them responded…

    Please let me know whom can I raise a complaint against all these people.

    It is because of these people I had to incur some money loss as I was not able to work from home regarding something that must have reached my US offcie on saturday morning.

    Had any of these people confirmed that BSNL cannot give connection in time for my broadband, I would have atleast applied with AIRTEL.

I am still trying by sending requests to BSNL officials etc. But no hope. They just forward some unverified info that they received from Exchange level staff !! No good customer care. Even public grievance cell is not good. No response, nothing. But I decided not to quit

    Does BSNL give 256 Kbps bandwidth in real ?? i mean to ask if we try testing it with a few sites searched from google.. http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest, it shows near about 235 to 245 kbps…so they claim they are providing us with such a great offer for just Rs 500…but anyone knows what actual speeds does it maintain if there are simulataneous downloads …they just divide upto into KB’s adding upto the single one which was downloaded alone…what is bandwidth ?? what do they say about 256 kbps , is it truly a BROADBAND connection which handles all the load per second.

    I am pretty happy with the BSNL home-500 plan.
    I have been using it for last 6 months or so. I have been enjoying a consistent download speed of around 225 KBytesPS (close to max – 256 ofcourse with additional download manager s/w ).
    The reliability factor hasn’t been great.Its been OK barring a few occasions of connection losses & delay in getting connected.
    Most of the complaints against BSNL were in the period before revision of the scheme.From my experience, I believe BSNL are not doing a bad job at the moment.

I don’t know why they pay money to Preety Zinta for advertisement, rather they should pay to their greedy employees. These b… officers are sitting idle.     i got a new 256 kbps unlimited connection recently
    first of all it gets frequently disconnected
    for god sakes u turn on utorrent it goes offline
    only god knows why
    works well while downloading on ie though solid 32 kbps
    reaches good speed though like 32kbps max
    but keeps fluctuating anywhere around.01 to 32 kbps
    phone line is crappy
    no proper service engineers
    they don t know first thing about isp
    if you call them home for service they give crappy reasons like we are doing pooja today… that was a working day though..
    and need to pay your technician bribe to come and fix the line every time…
    tata indicom was providing me with a 128 kbps
    connection before this… used to be solid 16 kbps
    no disconnections
    but they have a billing department that sucks…
    treat you like shit…

    In Chennai I find their services good. I have a 2.5mbps line with Rs500 plan and 1.5GB download limit. I usually get a download speed of not less than 100kbps. I am happy with their service also. No complaints here.

    well my complaint is regarding the bsnl landline bill
    I had to take a compulsory landline connection if i wanted to use the broadband services so i ended up paying the entire years broadband charges (where i got a discount of 2 months :) thankfully some perks)
    now i get a monthly bill of Rs120+service tax which is added in 2-3 different places mentioned as a ST for broadband + landline rent + calls made

    The last bill i received was for the amount of Rs.950/- approx. and the number of calls metered was a shocking 550 that too in the month of october during navratri
    Funnily though i was out of station for almost 10 days and since im working the landline is never used at home… at the most 1-3 calls are made that too in emergencies.
    I have 3 cell phones which i call at 0.50ps per min
    so i dont need a Rs.1.20/- per min outgoing call
    The Sub-Div engineer on complaining to her replied that go through the call list CD and i find the following :-
    1)17/10/07 calls:250 (total metered calls in 1 day) (same cell phone number which i have no clue about its ownership)
    2)19/10/07 calls:44 (total metered calls in 1 day) (same cell phone number which i have no clue about its ownership)
    3)22/10/07 calls:56 (total metered calls in 1 day) (same cell phone number which i have no clue about its ownership)
    4)31/10/07 calls:84 (total metered calls in 1 day) (same cell phone number which i have no clue about its ownership)

    you can sum them and find almost 520 calls made i n4 days on a unknown cell phone number which when i called replied as being a PCO for a medical shop about 4 kms from my place of residence and i have no contact or knowledge about the place person or number

    The sub-div engineer for my exchange told me a servant or unknown visitor may have called when they came to my place
    Well out of the 4 max metered days my house was locked bec i was not home…
    When i asked for a detailed bill she refused saying go to the police they will get it from bsnl {nto the consumer who is goingto pay the bill F}

    The best part now:
    i went to the police he says this complaint does not come under any section which they have listed as a FIR category….. :?
    i am at a loss please tell me what i can do to avoid paying Rs.1000/- for calls i have nto made ????? :(

    I have a similar problem with BSNL Dataone. I requested my in-laws to get Dataone Home 250 plan as we live in australia and it will be chaeper to make calls using VOIP.

    It was a nightmare getting a connection took them over 2-3months. It was setup in mid-Novemeber. Currently, we are visiting HYD. My in-laws didn’t receive any bill just a phone call stating unpaid bill. We paid the bill for landline+Dataone for Nov 07 and Dec07 without seeing itemsied billing. I checked the bill and it has excess usage in Dec 485MB. They were not issued any Portal ID so I visited Ameerpet CSE and taked with Mr Bose and account enquiries. We were told to go to Telephone Bhawan. Visited Mr Narasiah and usual routine. Please write a complain and we will see we have to contact Bangalore for detailed billing or investigation. I received Portal ID and checked it. Download is 339mb for dec07 (reasonable) and upload is 1899mb for dec07 (can’t believe it as there is no PC in the house only VOIp device which uses G.729 codec (3mb for 10mins of talk).
    Don’t know what to do. How to complaint. have called so many times and being going around on circles.

    For the past one month I have been facing problem in connecting to the BSNL (sancharnet) connection. I am using dial up connection and the modem I am using is Motorola SM56-Version 4.10, when I dial for atleast 15-20 times only then I get connected to the internet.When I try to monitor the dialing status I observe the follwing in modem dialar status..

    a)Dialing b)Opening port c)Negotiating connection d)Connected in datamode c-56(veryfing username and password) .
    e)disconnected due to poor line quality.

    can anybody suggest some solution on this, whether the Modem driver are to be updated or the telephone line has got some problem as when I call up BSNL mentioning about the poor line quality they say the problem is with your system and hardly they bother to answer.

    Any suggestion or help on this will be of great help.

    Hello Folks,
    I am a Software architect in the world biggest telecom company called Verizon Inc. I too have a few bad experience with my current ISP BSNL. BSNL asset is very big however they don’t have professional employees also they outsourced their call center, that’s the biggest drop in BSNL.
    Basically BSNL people doesn’t know how the DSL technology works and the funny part is they have a template start from1 -100…. for troubleshooting steps to reslove the customers issue(not in the call center in the exchange office), that’s the reason whenever you call the call center they are giving the phone numbers of the exchange people to call.

    Currently I am using the 500 c plan which is ok for me but the billing is really worst. Be aware of the bill and call the call center 1500 to get the information what are the charges that they charged in your bill.

    I am getting the download speed of 1710 kbps and upload is 357 kbps which is really good however when I am trying to download any application it is automatically reduce the speed due to contigency so I installed a good application in order to download the application too faster. Transfer limit is averagly reached 254 kbps, I mean recently I installed the Service pack 3 for my virtual machine which was having the size of 336 MB, you can’t believe it I was downloaded in 20 minutes by using this poor BSNL broadband. So I would like to inform to everyone that if any one needs to get my help regarding the technical part, just shoot the mail to me . I would like to help to fix your technical issue in your premises not in the outside of the premises that the poor BSNL will take care of that.

    I agree with you guys that their customer service is the worst.
    But they are the best Broadband providers in the country(in terms of speed).
    Download speed can get to a Maximum of 300 KBPS. It would take me 1 hour to download a torrrent file of 700 MB).
    This is what we call broadband. Other service providers suck.

    You guys really shouldnd be complaining……I got a Broadband Bill for the month of december totalling 1,25,700/- in indian rupees, and thats not all the suceeding month when there was no connection at all the bill totalled 80,000/-.     And dont even think about calling the dumb customer care SOB’s they will lead you to more trouble…No matter what they say is a lie…

    Is there no BSNL authority looking at this ? If one is there please come forward mail to mitraanugraha@hotmail.com. Please go on solving the problem. BSNL as well year mark different knowledge agencies for solving lakhs of problems. Are you sure the figure 1,45,000 such problems are there arround the world regarding BSNL broadband. Still if it works it works like heven. can realy persue the authorities.

    I changed my plan to unlimited 750… I gave a letter for it… however, BSNL never updated it from Rs. 500 to Rs. 750 plan… I kept using the net thinking i’ve been changed to the Unlimited Plan… Now my months bill has come to Rs. 13500… Is this fair… ??

    I have a 250 home plan and boy that sure pisses me off me balls. “BSNL is now connected. Speed 100.0 mbps” omfg! The actual speeds barely exceeds 100 kbps. Now that sure is insanity

    thier engineers look like people who were hired to REPAIR PHONES…not fix internet connections.
    if u call BSNL thy will nvr even pick the bloody phone up.
    and life is miserable with a stupid 1GB limit.

    I sympathize with you friend. Their customer service is the worst, I ever experienced.

    I have a CellOne post paid connection and they signed me up for OneIndia calling plan and sent me a bill a Rs.600 (charges for the last month and the current month). When I called their customer support agent, she was a very rude girl who told me that I sent an sms to signup for this service, whereas this is wrong. I did not send them any sms.

    Moreover, the ridiculous thing here is that they put a charge of Rs.600 on my phone bill but did not activate the service. When I was unable to make any STD call, I called them and inquired about it and they said that I have to deposit an amount of Rs. 1,000 to start off with this service. But these stupids charged me Rs.600 without activating the service.

    Overall, I really had a very bad, infact the worst experience of customer service with BSNL. I decided to cancel my CellOne mobile connection and will even cancel the landline phone. Better go with Tata Indicom or Reliance landlines, as I believe their customer service would not be so bad as these guys provided.

    Google Public DNS: Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers. This will be helpful in those condition when your ISP (internet service provider e.g. BSN., MT.., Tat. Indi., Airt.. Broadband etc. ) is blocking any websites which is working perfectly fine with other ISPs. This will also enhance your browsing speed.

    the 100 mbps is actually the speed between ur modem and ur comp via ethernet…
    but even if u go to ur browsers home page, the current data rate is always like one-tenth the attainable data rate

    but they do have unlimited plans my dear friend such as the 499 , 750 
    its quite comfy speed and u can download unlimited !! 
    i totally yet agree with u still tht BSNL sucks !!! 
    but its quite ok and cheaper compared 2 others and is most advised by anyone

    They try to sell their modem which gets obselete with a year compared to D-Link modem which is lasting still for me after 5 years.
